Facts on Pancreatic Enzyme Replacement Therapy

If you have a problem such as exocrine pancreatic efficiency, it means that your pancreas is unable to produce the enzymes that are needed to help in your food digestion, and the absorption of the nutrients. Therefore, you need to undergo a treatment – pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy that will help normalize your digestion.

PERT or the pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy, is basically a pancreatic enzyme supplement in the form of capsules and its content are mixture of digestive enzymes. It also has lipase that is responsible for the breakdown of fat; the protease that will assist in the digestion of the protein; and the amylase for the digestion of the carbohydrates.

The intake of the PERT differs from one person to another but most people would follow the two capsule practices for every meal. This only means that there are various variables that need to be taken into consideration such as the size and fat content of your food, the residual function of your pancreas and most importantly, the goal of PERT for you.

Oftentimes, experts recommend that the dosage of PERT should start in a low dosage and will just increase depending on the need. You might want to follow steps to make the treatment faster and effective.

Therefore, the first capsule should be taken together with your first bite and if you have multiple enzymes, the next must be taken at least midway of your meal. Put in mind that enzymes work well if they are being mixed with the food.

Next, put in mind that it is not advised to drink your medicine if you have an empty stomach. Put in mind that the digestive function of your pancreas is already performed by your supplement and the enzymes can function well if they have food mixed to them.

Another tip is to not repeat a dose if you happen to skip a meal. The enzymes will function 60 minutes after you take them but if you have excessive doses, it might lead to side effects.

Take your medication every meal and never take it twice in a given meal if you happen to skip the dose on your previous meal.

Never chew the capsule instead swallow it whole. You also need to drink water with your meals. If you love to eat snacks, you can also take your medicine but in half dose only. It is also important that you observe proper storage of the medication at room temperature so as not to damage it.

Lastly, you must know the right medication for you by seeing your doctor regularly.
